It was during the reign of the expansionist Umayyad Caliphs, that Islam's dominion reached it's peak. Their armies reached India in the East and Spain in the West, The Umayyad Caliphs depended on the charge of the fearsome Syrian heavy cavalry as well as their disciplined Syrian infantry. Caliph Marwan II reformed the Umayyad army and it was during his reign that the Muslim heavy cavalry outnumbered the Byzantine's own. His forces were sub-divded into smaller units, each including heavy infantry, bowmen and the aforementioned heavy cavalry.
